Umami Powder MSG
Umami powder – also known as monosodium glutamate or MSG or gourmet powder in China – is a flavouring which enhances dishes with a savoury, meaty umami taste. The tiny, salt-like MSG crystals were created and patented at the start of the twentieth century when Japanese Professor Ikeda isolated glutamate, or the ‘umami’ molecule, from a dashi seaweed stock and was able to manufacture it comercially.
Despite being a relatively new addition to Asian store cupboards, monosodium glutamate has quickly become a cult ingredient. Try adding a pinch of umami powder to soups, stews and sauces to add extra body and depth.
Store in a cool dry place. Avoid contact with moisture.
